Derry CIty celebrate winning the FAI Cup in 2012.

Derry CIty celebrate winning the FAI Cup in 2012.

Around 6,000 Derry City fans are expected to travel south to Dublin today for the Candystripes’ Ford FAI Cup Final clash with St Patrick’s Athletic at the Aviva Stadium (kick-off 3.30pm).

The sides have met three times this season, all in the league, with City failing to register a win – drawing 0-0 and losing 1-0 at Brandywell with a heavy 5-2 thumping at Richmond Park sandwiched in between.

Defending champions St Pat’s finished third in the league, nine points behind winners Dundalk, winning 19, drawing eight and losing six of their 33 games, scoring 66 goals and conceding 37.

Derry ended the league campaign in eighth place, winning only nine, drawing 11 and losing 13, finishing with 38 points,  scoring 42 goals and conceding 41.

City may go into today’s game as underdogs – but they have FAI Cup history on their side.

Since coming into the league in 1985, the Brandywell club have played in nine finals, winning five – the last two (2006 and 2012) against today’s opponents.

Since joining the League of Ireland in 1951, St Pat’s have also contested the final on 10 occasions, but have only won twice – in 1959 and 1961.
