The Fleadh Cheoil was one of the highlights of Derry’s year as City of Culture.

City Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly has extended an open invitation to everyone to attend the service which take place as the sun sets on the final day of what he described as “this momentous year.”

Mayor Reilly said the Ceremony of Thanksgiving would offer a chance for looking back at the events of  City of Culture year and acknowledge the “tremendous work, efforts made and benefits” gained during 2013.

He stressed the invitation to attend the “joyous occasion” was open to all members of the public.

Mayor Reilly said: “This year has taught us something about the citizens of this city and their willingness to embrace, welcome and participate.

“Now as it comes to a close we can take time to reflect and thank all who have been involved at this dedicated Ceremony of Thanksgiving.

“The thousands who have contributed to this year, some of whom may not be well known;  those who were involved in volunteering, on the ground at community organizations, and individual events; those who participated, enjoyed or experienced to the good-will factor in the city.

“Those who enriched us with their art, music, ideas and those who benefited from business, employment opportunities, educational and community programmes – each and everyone are welcome to attend.

“This is a poignant time to reflect and reminisce on the year that has been, give thanks to all and look forward to a positive future for the city.”

“As the sun sets on 2013, at precisely 4.11pm on the 31st of December, we will have the opportunity to reflect spiritually and look towards the legacy of Culture year that will remain into the future.”

Mayor Reilly concluded: “I have no doubt that everyone can play their part in this, the power that each person holds in terms of continuing with their level of community cohesion, the light that has been ignited and the warmth of the proud people of this city will go towards achieving this.”

The public Ceremony of Thanksgiving will take place at 3.30pm on 31st December 2013 in St Eugene’s Cathedral and is a result of the efforts of MP Mark Durkan and Fr Francis Bradley on behalf the Churches in the area.  The event is open to everyone, no ticket required.   For more information Contact Derry Diocese Office on Tel: 028 7126 2894.
