Flights have resumed at City of Derry Airport as the gale force winds that blew across the North West from early this morning begin to ease.

Foyle Bridge has also fully reopened after being closed to high-sided vehicles.

The 7.55am to Liverpool finally took off from Derry at just before 3.00pm this afternoon.

Morning flights to and from London Stansted and Glasgow Prestwick were diverted to George Best City Airport in Belfast with passengers being transferred by bus as gusts reached up to 80mph.

A number of trees are reported to have been blown down in the Culmore and Claudy areas.

As a precaution, Northern Ireland Electricity initiated an “escalation plan” and placed emergency crews, engineers and call handlers on standby.

An NIE spokesperson said: “We would like to remind customers that if they do lose electricity supplies they should contact the NIE Customer Helpline on 08457 643 643 or report the fault online at nie.co.uk.

Meanwhile, winds will continue to ease throughout this evening with clear spells. Temperatures are expected to drop to a minimum of  3 °C overnight.

Tomorrow will see a dry and bright start with some sunshine before clouding over with rain forecast for the afternoon. Maximum temperature 11 °C.
