Derry MP Colum Eastwood to face court over pro-Gaza protest

Former SDLP leader Colum Eastwood is to appear in court today charged with taking part in an unnotified parade in Derry.

The Foyle MP is to face Derry Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, May 6, to face a charge connected with a pro-Gaza rally that took place in Derry last February 14.

The event was held at the War Memorial in the Diamond area of the city centre. After speeches, participants walked to Derry’s Guildhall.

Mr Eastwood is one of five people scheduled to appear in Court 2 at Bishop Street Courthouse this morning charged with taking part in an unnotified procession.

Under Northern Ireland’s legislation governing parades and processions, the organisers of such events must apply in advance to the Parades Commission adjudication body for permission.

The Derry branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has organised a protest outside Derry Magistrates’ Court ahead of proceedings on Tuesday morning.
