Harkin: MPs must vote down punitive welfare cuts

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin has called on MPs to vote down ”punitive welfare cuts” which will hit hardest disabled and vulnerable people.

“We stand in solidarity with Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) and all those mobilising to demand MPs vote against Starmer’s terrible and cruel welfare cuts today in Westminster.

“The British Government says they need to ‘balance the budget’ – but instead of taxing the billionaire wealth that is skyrocketing, they’re punching down on disabled and vulnerable people.

“The damage these cuts will result in is clear and they will be felt disproportionately in Derry and across the North.

“All MPs should vote against these disastrous and punitive plans.

“If these proposals pass, it is decision time for Stormont.

“Ten years ago, Sinn Féin, the DUP and Alliance joined together to allow Westminster to implement welfare reform in the North.

“The consequences have been dire, as People Before Profit warned they would be. The only reason Starmer’s cuts will impact us here is because of this decision a decade ago.

“In 2025, have the big parties learned their lesson? Will they stand up to Westminster, and refuse to implement these vicious cuts? Or will they bow down to this austerity agenda and once again punish ordinary people?

“We need to be out on the streets demanding the big parties don’t repeat the sell outs of the past: Say No To Welfare Cuts!”
