Durkan: Executive must recognise investment opportunities in public transport

SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed an increase in the use of bus and rail services across the North but urged the Executive to invest in public transport and harness the opportunity it offers.

It follows confirmation from Translink that they have recorded and additional three million passenger journeys for 2024/25, resulting in almost 81.2 million passengers.

Said the Foyle MLA: “It’s great to see that more and more people are opting to use public transport, that’s despite a lack of investment from the Executive.

“The fact that rail and bus journeys are on the rise, despite multiple fare increases and a fairly limited rail network, is proof of the public’s desire to use more sustainable modes of transport.

“The need for investment in public transport has been largely ignored by the Executive.

“Indeed, the Programme for Government is notable in its lack of commitment to, and detail around future spend.

“Public spending per person on public transport in the North is the lowest among other UK jurisdictions; with just £193 per head spent in Northern Ireland compared to £465 in England and Scotland.

“While governments in other jurisdictions are driving investment towards public transport and passing on savings to passengers, the North continues to lag behind.

“The Executive must recognise the tremendous opportunity in investing in public transport.

“This isn’t just about infrastructure but improving the quality of life, lowering carbon emissions, enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth across the region.

“We need action now to harness the opportunities of future prosperity.”
