SDLP MLA for Foyle, Sinéad McLaughlin, has welcomed the announcement of a new easyJet route from City of Derry Airport (CoDA) to Birmingham, launching this September, as well as the confirmation of funding to continue the Derry to London Heathrow service for another two years.

Commenting on the developments, Ms McLaughlin said: ”This is fantastic news for the North West.

“The announcement of a new easyJet route from City of Derry Airport to Birmingham will strengthen our connectivity with the rest of the UK, creating more opportunities for business, tourism, and travel.

“Expanding our air links is essential for supporting local businesses, attracting investment, and boosting economic growth in our region.”

Further welcoming the funding announcement for the Heathrow route, Ms McLaughlin added: ”The continuation of the Derry to London Heathrow service for another two years is a vital investment in our economy.

“This route provides a crucial link not only to London but also to wider international markets, helping local businesses expand and ensuring that Derry remains globally connected.

”Strong air connectivity is essential for job creation, economic growth, and making the North West an attractive place to do business.

“Government must continue prioritising infrastructure that drives prosperity and opportunity for Derry and beyond.

“The SDLP has consistently advocated for sustained investment in our transport links to guarantee the North West receives the connectivity it needs and deserves.

“This announcement is a positive step forward, but it must be part of a broader, long-term strategy—not just a one-off commitment.”
