Durkan welcomes move to improve taxi accessibility

SDLP Fairer Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed an announcement from the Minister that the department will undertake a phased review of taxi policy and legislation.

Mr Durkan said this is a crucial move that will bring much needed improvements for the industry including increasing access to wheelchair accessible taxis.

It follows a briefing from departmental officials to the Infrastructure Committee on Wednesday.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I’m pleased that the Infrastructure Minister has announced that she will commence a phased review of current Taxi Legislation.

“Aspects of existing legislation are outdated and long overdue review. The first phase of the review will focus on the impact of Class C classification of Wedding and Funeral cars and the restrictions it places on those operating in that industry.

“The Minister says the next phase will review access to Wheelchair Accessible Taxis. While this commitment is welcome, we will be pushing for it to be accelerated, having called for action on this for a long time.

“It is vitally important that vulnerable and people with mobility issues do not have their opportunities curtailed by a lack of access to suitable transport.

“I have heard from many people over the years about how their inability to get wheelchair accessible taxis has not only had a negative impact on their chances to socialise, increasing isolation, but even on their ability to access medical appointments.

“The Executive must recognise, respect and facilitate the rights of all citizens.”
