Police probe masked men firing shots in Derry

Police Derry City and Strabane say they are “aware” of a video that showing masked men firing shots into the air.

The video shows three masked men, dressed in black clothing, in front of an INLA mural in the Bogside area under cover of darkness.

One of the men is holding a photograph as another fires shots from a hand gun into the night sky.

The video finishes with a message about “veteran Republican Sean McLaughlin”.

A Requiem Mass was held for Sean McLaughlin in Derry on Saturday at St Mary’s Church, Creggan, followed by interment in the City Cemetery.

According to a family notice, the Derry man died “peacefully at the Royal Victoria Hospital” in Belfast on Tuesday, March 18.

In a statement, a Police Derry City and Strabane spokesperson said: “We are aware of a video on social media which appears to show masked men firing shots into the air.

“Enquiries are being conducted.

“Officers would ask anyone with any information to contact them at Strand Road on 101, or online using the non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.

“You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/.”
