Harkin: Soldier F on trial is British state on trial

Soldier F was charged with the murder of William McKinney (left) and James Wray on Bloody Sunday

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said the decision to put Soldier F on trial for the Bloody Sunday murders is the “British State on trial”.

“People Before Profit welcome the announcement Soldier F will go on trial in September for the murder of James Wray and William McKinney, and the attempted murder of five others, on Bloody Sunday.

“We commend the determination of family members and campaigners to hold those responsible for Bloody Sunday to account.

“It is 53-years since the British state sent its military representatives into Derry with the assignment to murder Civil Rights marchers, but the campaign for truth and justice has never relented.

“The British government has sought to protect its parachute regiment killers for decades through lies, cover-up, delay and evasion.

“Soldier F pulled the trigger on Bloody Sunday and should be held to account, but the British government and top military brass who gave the orders should be held to account too.

“When it comes to violence the British state is one of the greatest purveyors of violence in human history.

“The British Empire, and British rule in Ireland, was built on one war crime after another.

“Those in charge of the British state’s legacy of violence have never been held to account.

“This is a not a matter of the past.

“The British state participated in the illegal invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq.

“The British state is complicit in Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people.

“Soldier F on trial is the British state on trial.

“There should be no more delays.

“We stand with the Bloody Sunday families in their demand for truth, accountability and justice.”
