Harkin: Danske Bank profiteering from housing scarcity

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has accused Danske Bank of profiteering from the lack of housing in the North of Ireland.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “Danske Bank pulled in a staggering £860,000 in profit on everyone of the 254 working days for 2024.

“No wonder they’re crowing.

“Families across the North struggle to pay basic bills but Danske Bank bosses are celebrating record massive profits.

“Banks are profiteering from the massive hikes on mortgage interest rates they imposed.

“Housing scarcity has allowed banks and big landlords to drive up mortgage and rental costs.

“The Stormont Executive facilitates profiteering by refusing to build housing, refusing to cap rents and refusing to lift a finger to regulate mortgage costs.

“The main parties promote an “enabling culture” for corporate profiteers that’s been disastrous for the finances of the vast majority of people and ruinous for the environment.

“The Stormont Executive, just like Starmer and Micheál Martin, insist there is no alternative to capitalism.

“We’re not ‘open for business’ at any cost. There is an alternative. And it starts with regulating the banks and capping mortgage rates.”
