Main Letterkenny-Lifford road closed over ‘serious incident’

The main Letterkenny-Lifford road is currently closed after a ‘serious’ crash early this morning.

Gardaí confirmed they were dealing with a ‘serious road traffic collision’ on the N14 at Feddyglass, north of Lifford.

“There is currently a road closure in place on the N14 between Lifford and Ballinalecky Cross,” a garda spokesperson said.

“An Garda Síochána is not in a position to confirm any more information at this time.”

Speaking earlier, however, Superintendent Liam Geraghty said the incident happened during the Orange wind warning (before 7am).

“Unfortunately, we are attending a serious road traffic collision on the N14, just north of Lifford,” he said.

“This incident actually happened in an Orange wind warning in the Donegal area which has now gone to a red warning.

“Our appeal to people is to shelter.”

Supt Geraghty added that it is currently difficult for gardaí to attend incidents due to the conditions during Storm Éowyn.

An Orange wind warning was upgraded to Red at 7am for Donegal, and will remain in place until 2pm.

An Garda Síochána is reminding the public that, during a Status Red Warning, members of the public should ‘shelter in place’.

Once Red Warnings expire, there remains an Orange Wind Warning in place for the entire country until at least 4pm.

“Once the time duration of a red warning has passed in your area, please exercise extreme caution and care when venturing out on the public roads, an orange wind warning remains in place,” the spokesperson added.

“There will be fallen trees, structural and other unexpected debris, and fallen or damaged live electricity wires in many areas across the country.

“Trees and structures may be unstable.

“The emergency services and our colleagues in local authorities and utility service providers will be busy across the road network identifying and repairing damaged infrastructure.

“An Garda Síochána appeals to every person using the public roads after the expiration of the weather warnings and over this coming weekend, to slow down, expect the unexpected and stay safe.”
