Cusack calls for action on anti-social motorised vehicles

Independent Councillor for Foyleside Shauna Cusack has called for stakeholders and the public to work together to tackle the distressing issue of motorbikes, scramblers and quads in residential areas and parks.

Cllr Cusack said: “This is certainly not a new problem and usually more visible in the summer season but it’s becoming more prevalent all year round, now more than ever.

“I have been contacted consistently every year about this issue throughout my Foyleside constituency and beyond, especially in local parks and residential green areas.

“While this is happening throughout the whole City, this week I called around to inspect the damage, dirt and distress this is causing specifically to residents of Ballymagroarty.

“I was appalled at what they had been experiencing. No one should have to endure living daily with that, especially young families.

“This may be a fun activity for those using the bikes and quads but their behaviour is not only upsetting the community but dangerous to themselves and quite often illegal.

“I have contacted a number of agencies to highlight and see what can be done in the short and long term to tackle this issue and steps have been made already.

2I am also asking the public to help with identification as local knowledge is key.

“I would implore parents to stop and think about the consequences of giving their children these vehicles, ask where they are going to use them safely and legally as they would be not only putting themselves and others at risk but potentially breaking the law.”
