Derry set to celebrate Christmas with feast of festive fun and frolics

The return of the popular Magical Procession through the city centre to turn on the Christmas lights on Friday November 22nd is one of the highlights of a comprehensive programme of festive activity launched by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Lilian Seenoi-Barr, this week.

The event will mark the start of five weeks of programming that aims to bring people together to celebrate the Christmas season and support local businesses.

Other highlights are the Guildhall Craft Fair from November 22nd – 24th and the Mayor’s Christmas Tea Dances.

In recent years thousands of people have lined the streets of the city for the procession, led by the Mayor and Santa Claus, who are joined by festive characters and Christmas themed mobile installations who turn the lights on as they pass.

The parade begins at Bishop Street, weaves its way through the city and calls into Guildhall Square where a 60 foot Christmas tree will be lit for the first time.

“Christmas is such a magical time of the year in our beautiful city and I am delighted that we are hosting a number of events that will allow people to share the joy and magic of the festive season together,” said Mayor Barr.

“Our aim is to create unforgettable experiences for the public while supporting our local traders and businesses so that they can get the most out of their busiest time of the year.

“Many local businesses have experienced a challenging year and I would like to encourage shoppers to make an extra effort to support them this Christmas.

“When we shop local and keep money in the local economy it gives everyone a boost.”

The three day Guildhall Craft Fair is considered one of the most prominent showcases of bespoke craft items in Ireland and will feature a wide range of products created by craft designer makers and artists.

The Mayor’s Christmas Tea Dances are scheduled for Wednesday December 11th in the Guildhall and Thursday 17th December in St Patrick’s Hall in Strabane.

The wider programme will include a range of other events around the district.
