Halloween town or Christmas lane, one street fighting for the title in a story of friendly neighbourhood rivalry.

Derry locals have been delighted for the last few weeks to have been treated to Christmas illuminations in October.

Although this is Halloween week – John Lynch has always had a love of Christmas.

John, 41, CEO of Youth Work Alliance stated: “Some might raise an eyebrow at my ‘early’ Christmas spirit, but for me, it’s about more than just a date on the calendar.”

This love of Christmas however has not gone down well two doors up with John’s neighbour, Danny Mc Feely, Outdoor Pursuits lecturer.

Danny’s home is also illuminated with the seasonal spirit of Samhain, displayed in his garden.

In response to his neighbour’s love of all things Christmas, Danny responded with:

“You have heard of the Grinch who stole Christmas, well here the Grinch has stolen Halloween, and that’s what we’re all about, no rivalry.”

The street of Temple park has become a magnet for visitors, due to the unusual sight of both seasons on display,

For some the Christmas decor is too early, and for others, not soon enough, however for Danny it is all in good fun. Both men work hard for the Community, with Danny involved in starting up a new Canoe club called Driftwood Canoe club.

“In outdoor pursuits, I work with people of all ages and as long as people are getting out there that is the main thing with health and well-being.

“We have started up a Canoe club there called Driftwood canoe club. Last night there we just did a paddle in the Foyle.

“We had the boats all rafted up with lights, and music and we were dressed up – just to put a wee bit of life into the Foyle itself and to utilize it more than what it should be, for the right reasons.”

Temple Park has shown to be a street with a sense of humour and good fun, with both neighbours giving back to their communities in their respective jobs.

Whether the street will be crowned Halloween Town or Christmas Lane is yet to be decided so for now people can enjoy both.
