A special meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council will be held 2pm on Tuesday, October 29, in the Guildhall to hear from Freeze the Cuts campaign, Unite the Union and Age NI representatives calling for Reinstatement of the Winter Fuel Payment.

A protest organised by Freeze the Cuts and backed by UNITE, UNISON, NIPSA, UCU, NUJ, Derry Trades Union Council, Older People North West, Foyle Network Foundation, Creggan Community Collective, Derry Women’s Centre, NI Anti-Poverty Network and many other organisations will be held before the Special Council meeting at 1.30pm at the Guildhall.

Freeze the Cuts “encourages support for the protest and asks people to fill the Guildhall chamber to send a clear message to Keir Starmer and the Stormont Executive that this cruel and dangerous cut must be reversed”.

It adds: “Now is the time when government should be tackling obscene profiteering and wealth hoarding by billionaires, instead of harming and hurting older people.

“We want action, not more excuses. We are prepared to escalate this campaign with direct action to stop older people from freezing and possibly dying in their homes this winter.”
