The campaigning group United Against Racism Derry and NW will receive special recognition for their role in combatting racism and the far right at a Civic Reception hosted by the Mayor of Derry and Strabane.
Spokesperson Davy McAuley said the group were honoured to accept: “It is good to receive recognition from our Mayor and Council for the work we do. Many of us have been involved in anti racism for most of our adult lives.
“We accept this honour on behalf of all the people of Derry who refuse to accept the hatred and bigotry that has become commonplace throughout these Islands.
“Derry continues to lead the way as a city of Civil Rights. Our city will always be a city of hope and sanctuary for those fleeing persecution.
“We thank the Mayor and the Council for this civic reception and as always we reaffirm our commitment to defend minority communities from scapegoating and hatred.
“The huge crowds in Guildhall Square just a few weeks ago at the rally organised by UAR after the Belfast race riots are a reflection of the mood and character of this place.
“The reception will take place at 6pm in the Mayor’s Chamber on Tuesday 24th September
“Refugees are welcome here.
“Those who live here belong here. ”
