Local venues are getting set to throw open their doors this September to celebrate all things cultural, as Culture Night 2024 gets underway.

On September 20th, across the country, artists, musicians and creators in all genres, will showcase their work, hoping to connect with new audiences and celebrate our rich and unique cultural heritage.

The Deputy Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Alderman Darren Guy, stopped in to Number 19 Craft and Design in the Craft Village today to launch the programme, just one of the venues taking part in this year’s programme.

Looking ahead to Culture Night, Ald Guy said: “It’s so important that we value the role of culture and creativity in our community.

“It’s part of our heritage, it’s how we entertain and engage our visitors, and it’s a vital contributor to our local economy.

“Culture Night offers the opportunity to try new things and to celebrate the multi-faceted cultural offering here in the City and District.

“Lots of local venues are taking part in the programme, and all the events are free. I would really encourage everyone to get out there, try something new, and support our creative industries.”

This year’s programme features workshops, exhibitions, performances and talks by some leading local artists, musicians, writers and makers at venues across Derry and Strabane.

Among the highlights are mini-memoir writing with acclaimed author Dave Duggan at Acorn Books, ‘Looking for Brigid in Derry’ at St Columb’s Hall, ‘Did You Make that Yourself?’ in No. 19 Craft and Design in the Craft Village, music in the Alley Theatre and a Derry Girls Panel Discussion in the Tower Museum.

Looking ahead to the event, Arts and Culture Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, John Kerr, said: “I am delighted to see so many venues getting on board this year and providing the opportunity for artists to showcase their work in so many different creative fields.

“It’s a great way to engage people of all ages in new activities and inspire future generations of performers and creatives, as well as celebrating the many talented artists we are lucky to have practicing here in the North West.”
