Derry City and Strabane District Council is inviting stakeholders and residents to attend a series of public information sessions on the proposed designs for three new play parks in the Derg District Electoral Area.

The play parks are at Hillview Play Park in Castlederg, Glebe Play Park and Cluny Gardens Play Park in Clady, and sessions will take place on Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd August for the Derg areas.

The Engagement Events are open to residents, community groups and stakeholders with an interest in replacing the play park in their respective areas.

Looking ahead to the sessions, Mayor of Derry and Strabane Councillor Lilian Seenoi-Barr, encouraged people to attend the events local to them, so the project and design could be tailored to meet their needs.

“This is a key element of the design phase of the new Play Park project and an opportunity to speak directly with the design team,” she said.

“Outdoor play provision for children is a key priority in our Strategic Growth Plan and we have invested significantly in parks projects throughout the City and District through Council’s Play Plan.

“We believe the provision of outdoor play facilities is critically important to the lives of children and young people contributing to the development of essential skills that support social, intellectual, physical, and emotional wellbeing.

“It also provides a means of connecting with the wider community as well as plenty of opportunities for fun and enjoyment.”

Plans will be on display at the following locations within the Derg area and the public are encouraged to drop in anytime between 3pm and 7pm to view the designs at the following locations:

Tuesday 20th August – Hillview Play Park, Unit 1 Churchtown Community Association, 48 Lurganboy Rd Castlederg BT81 7HT.

Tuesday 20th August – Glebe Cross Community Association, 47 Bellspark Rd, Sion Mills, Glebe, Strabane BT82 9NU.

Thursday 22nd August – Clady Hall Community Centre 153-154 Urney Rd, Strabane BT82 9RU.

A representative from Churchtown Community Association stated they were delighted to be involved with Council in the planning and development of a new play park facility on the Lurganbuoy road at Hillview.

The Association said they would encourage anyone who has an interest in the project to call in to view and comment on the plans at Unit 1 of the centre on Tuesday 20th August any time between 3pm and 7pm.

A member from Glebe Cross Community Association added: “The potential redevelopment of the playpark will be a fantastic asset for the area and the local community, it will create a safe place for children and families to visit and play.”

Eamonn Lafferty, Chairman of Clady Cross Community Development Association acknowledged and welcomed the opportunity to upgrade the play park in Clady, and said he is hopeful that it will be come to fruition.

“I would encourage full community involvement in this public consultation on Thursday 22nd August and encourage residents to drop in anytime 3pm until 7pm,” he added.
