Derry’s Daniel Coyle retires from equestrian event with four fences down

Daniel Coyle on his horse Legacy

There was disappointment for Derry’s Daniel Coyle when he had to retire his horse Legacy in the Olympic equestrian event this morning in Versailles.

The rider from Ardmore looked like he was going to make it a clear round without faults until he came into the closing stretch of fences.

It appeared Legacy started to tire and clipped a first pole down before taking a further three poles down.

With 16 penalty points on the board, Daniel made the wise decision to retire her from the event which saw a total of 30 riders take part in the Individual Final.

But Daniel should be heartened to know he had huge support back home in Derry.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Lilia Seenoi-Barr, posted on X.com: “Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Derry’s Daniel Coyle and Legacy.

“We are all incredibly proud of everything you have achieved Daniel, you have been an incredible ambassador for our City and District.

“Thanks for the memories.”

There was further disappointing news for Team Ireland when Shane Sweetman missed out on a jump off when his horse James Kann Cruz notched up to 13 penalty points leaving him in 22nd place.

Germany’s Christian Kukuk won the jump off and the gold medal on his ride Checker 47.
