The public are being asked to give their views on an exciting new project set to transform the Fountain and Bogside area of the city, by improving the streetscape and greenspaces for both residents and visitors.

The Realm Project will focus on enhancing the Executive Office’s Urban Villages Area of the Fountain Estate and Bogside, creating a safer and better-connected space with a more attractive and user-friendly streetscape.

The concept plans were approved by Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee in May, and now the community is being encouraged to take the opportunity to give their feedback on the proposed improvements.

Homes in the immediate area will be contacted by letter in the coming days with details of a series of engagement events taking place at venues in the area next week. The plans will also be available to view online for those who can’t attend in person.

The Realm Project is one of four key capital projects being taking forward with funding from The Executive Office Urban Villages Initiative in the Bogside and Fountain area.

The overall aim of the Realm Project is to provide a high-quality environment connecting the four sites – New Gate Cultural Hub, Gasyard Heritage & Exhibition Centre, Redevelopment of Meenan Square and the Realm Project – and other visitor attractions.

It will create in an attractive and accessible shared space within the Bogside, Fountain and Bishop Street Urban Village Area.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Lilian Barr, urged people to view and help enhance the plans.

“This is a great opportunity to see the concept plans before they are finalised and for the community to have their say.

“Much work has already gone into this area, and the improvements will make city centre venues and attractions like the New Gate Cultural Hub and the Gasyard Centre much more accessible for visitors.

“It will help connect our communities and build on the shared vision for the positive transformation of our city centre for the benefit of everyone.”

Written feedback can be submitted up to the end of June to [email protected]
