Eastwood: Ministers need to get behind Derry

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that WhatsApp messages between DUP Ministers and advisors clearly show that Derry and communities west of the Bann are an afterthought.

Mr Eastwood said that he would continue to fight for infrastructure and investment in the city and region after it was revealed that former DUP Leader and Minister Edwin Poots opposed the regional three airport model.

Said the Foyle MP: “For generations, people in Derry and in communities west of the Bann have had investment and infrastructure gradually eroded by successive government administrations.

“It has led to forced emigration, reductions in public services, jobs and quality of life – it has never been good enough.

“The publication of DUP WhatsApp messages today confirms that it isn’t just a historical view – ministers as recently as 2020 were continuing to oppose funding for critical transport infrastructure at the City of Derry Airport that is necessary for attracting jobs and investment.

“By contrast, the SDLP in government has delivered millions in additional support to make sure that the airport can continue serving people and communities in the North West.

“I have also pressed the British Government to recognise the value of the airport and secured investment to keep the gates open for people here.

“With proper investment, our airport can make a huge economic contribution to the city and the wider region.

“It shouldn’t be an uphill battle to convince ministers to invest in Derry but I will always be up for the fight.”
