The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council welcomed a representative from UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning to Derry this week as part of their country-wide visit.

Derry City and Strabane District Council is currently a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and the Irish Network of Learning Cities alongside Belfast, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford and Cork.

The global network sees cities around the world successfully promoting lifelong learning across their own communities, with a focus on learning ecosystems, skills for life and work, and inclusive learning.

Katya Roemer, Communications Specialist with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, visited Ireland to spend time in some of the member cities where she included Derry in her travels.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Patricia Logue, hosted a meeting on Saturday, April 13, in the Guildhall for Katya, alongside representatives of the Derry City and Strabane Learning City Network and Council officers.

“As a Council, we are committed to lifelong learning and dedicated to upholding the good practices and policy initiatives set out by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning.

“I was delighted to meet with Katya and discuss the workings of the global network, while hearing how we can implement and develop these initiatives across our own city and district.

“We had a powerful meeting discussing our achievements to date while reflecting on the impact of lifelong learning locally with our membership of both the Global and the Irish Networks.

“We also looked at the priorities going forward and discussed the #ImALifeLongLearner campaign which continues to mobilise learners from every corner of the globe.

“We are immensely proud to be a part of this network and of our ongoing efforts to encourage all our communities across the city and wider region to embrace the practices and inspire others to embark on their own lifelong learning journeys.”

The aim of the Irish Network is to share a dedication to strengthening friendly relations and enhancing cooperation between the people of the cities and city region.
