Durkan welcomes road safety measures at Whitehouse/Upper Galliagh junction

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed traffic safety improvement works at the Buncrana Road, specifically the junction between Whitehouse Road and Upper Galliagh Road.

The Department for Infrastructure has agreed to install necessary upgrades following several years of lobbying from Mr Durkan.

Said the Foyle MLA: “This junction has been a source of concern for due to the difficulties faced by motorists attempting to traverse it, particularly drivers entering into the Woodbrook and Whitehouse areas.

“It was hoped that a proposed widening of the Buncrana Road would help address some of the issues associated with the junction.

“However, for years, the planned dualing of Buncrana Road has been used as an excuse not to implement safety measures at this extremely dangerous junction.

“This area, leading onto the Skeoge, has grown rapidly within the last few years and with that growth comes increased traffic, compounding existing safety issues at this particular junction.

“Now that the DfI have shelved the major road upgrade, I’ve written to the Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd demanding that action is taken before lives are lost here.

“While I welcome the commitment I have secured to refresh road markings and install signage, I will continue to fight for more significant steps to be taken to reduce the risk here.”
