Four groups of trainee event stewards from across the Derry City and Strabane District Council area have successfully completed a course to prepare them to obtain employment as Event Stewards.

The Event Stewarding Employability Course was hosted by Utopian Training Solutions with support from the Derry Strabane Labour Market Partnership (LMP) and aimed to allow unemployed and economically inactive people in the Council area to gain the experience and qualifications necessary to pursue a career in the industry.

Labour Market Partnerships are funded by the Department for Communities to create targeted employment action plans for Council areas and allow for collaboration at local and regional level to support people towards and into work.

Derry and Strabane LMP Manager Nicky Gilleece said the course was an ideal gateway into working in the thriving events scene locally.

“Congratulations to all the candidates who successfully completed the course and are now in a strong position to gain employment at the many high level events that are hosted across our City and District,” she said.

“They now possess an OCN NI Level 2 Award in Stewarding at Spectator Events and have the necessary skills and experience to work with the likes of Pulse and Eventsec who provide stewarding at events all over Ireland.

“Offering the course for free is a key element of the local LMP’s commitment to help address skills imbalances in our local economy and supporting the unemployed and economically inactive in their journey back to employment.”

Through the months of February and March, groups in Derry, Strabane and Castlederg received the training and qualifications required to obtain employment as Event Stewards.

On completing the training, all participants have been invited to attend an Employability Seminar/Workshop in either Derry or Strabane where they can meet face to face with local employers and learn more about the opportunities available to them.

Utopian Training Solutions provide the final element of the course which is training and support in employability skills such as CV preparation and interview technique.
