Harkin: Support junior doctors strike

People Before Profit has called for the public to support the NHS Junior Doctors strike action.

Junior doctors will walk out at 8 am this morning for 24 hours in a row over a five per cent pay rise

Derry People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin said: “We’ll be joining Junior Doctors on their picket line at Altnagelvin Hospital.

“In response to their disappointing meeting with Stormont Health Minister Robin Swann, they have been given no option in the fight to save our Health Service.

“They are demanding fair pay and working conditions. Doctors are not taking this action lightly, but out of necessity and frustration.

“They have been subjected to years of pay cuts, understaffing, and lack of respect from a Tory government intent on NHS privatisation.

“They have tried to negotiate, to compromise, to be reasonable, but their voices have been ignored and concerns dismissed.

“They have no choice but to make their stand and fight for their rights – and for the safety of their patients.

“We all will need the Health Service at sometime in our life. It should be the focus of government spending but instead they find money for warfare and not welfare.

“NHS workers are heroes.

“They should be treated as such. Applause and mere platitudes are not enough.

“We call on people to support the striking doctors in their struggle and to understand that they are striking for all of us.”
