School leavers and people at a career crossroads have taken advantage of the chance to learn more about the apprentice opportunities that exist in the Council area at a special event at the Guildhall.
The Apprenticeship Fair was hosted by the Derry and Strabane Labour Market Partnership and featured representatives from local training providers who showcased the wide range of opportunities that exist across a variety of sectors.
The event was part of Apprenticeship Week which aimed to highlight that route as an alternative to the straight educational option.
Taking between two and four years to complete, they offer paid employment allowing participants to earn as they learn while working alongside experienced staff and gaining both training and qualifications specific to their chosen industry.
Attendees at the Fair received advice and information on the types of apprenticeships: Apprenticeships NI levels 2 and 3 and the Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLAs) which train apprentices from levels 4 to 7.
Derry and Strabane Labour Market Partnership Manager at Council, Nicky Gilleece, said that apprenticeships are proving an excellent solution for students and employers alike.
“An apprenticeship is an ideal way for students to apply their industry training to a hands on role which will give them both the qualifications and experience necessary to gain a permanent position.
Employers have also found that their apprentices have helped meet the needs of their business and many of the candidates go on to become valued members of staff when the term ends.
“The Apprenticeship Fair was a great chance for school leavers and job seekers to locate the apprentice opportunity that is right for them and begin their pathway towards full time employment.”
