Derry bishop criticised over denial of Gaza crib

Derry-based group the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has criticised a decision not to allow it to place a “community nativity crib for Gaza” in a Catholic church.

ISPC chairwoman Catherine Hutton asked Bishop of Derry the Most Reverend Donal McKeown to place the crib – featuring a rocket with the words “Made in USA” – in a church between December 22 and January 6.

Inspired by the ruined nativity crib in Bethlehem’s Lutheran church, it also features a baby Jesus wrapped in a keffiyeh (Palestinian scarf).

Ms Hutton said Bishop McKeown turned down the request.

In response, Ms Hutton said she told Bishop McKeown IPSC was a registered charity which worked for human rights for Palestinians.

She said the campaign “constantly” fundraised for Medical Aid for Palestinians.

“We are not affiliated to any political party and state clearly that the plight of the Palestinians is a human rights’ issue first and foremost.

“The churches in Bethlehem have called for solidarity with Gaza at this time,” Ms Hutton added.
