Harkin: Royal Mail bosses should admit poor planning is the problem

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said Royal Mail management should come clean and admit that poor planning is the problem.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “Postal workers and the CWU have long raised concerns that Royal Mail bosses are attempting to undermine the company’s universal service obligation to deliver letters six days a week.

“Management is now attempting to deflect public frustration at mail delivery occurring “every other day” in Derry onto its workforce.

“This is unacceptable. Not only is this creating public frustration, it’s undermining the morale of a dedicated workforce.

“Royal Mail workers are already under enough pressure – they shouldn’t be carrying the can for poor planning by its bosses.

“Delayed mail is a result of bad planning. Royal Mail bosses know what kind of volume to expect running up to the holiday period.

“They should be planning for every contingency to make sure people receive their mail on time.

“Instead of blaming workers for being sick and for not completing their delivery route, they should admit poor planning is the problem.

“Royal Mail workers are highly conscious of and highly committed to the company’s universal service obligation to deliver all the mail, including letters, daily and on time.

“However, its increasingly clear company bosses don’t share this commitment.

“Over the last year, through its treatment of its workforce and the public, company bosses have demonstrated they only care about profit.

“We stand with our posties and won’t allow them to be scapegoated for the failings of its top brass that see only profit signs.

“We demand fair treatment of Royal Mail workers and adherence to mail delivery six days a week.”
