Renewed calls for weight restrictions for B118 / Eglinton village

People Before Profit Faughan representative Damian Gallagher renewed calls for weight restriction on the B118 road going through Eglinton village.

Said Mr Gallagher: “I have today written to the Divisional Roads Manager (Western Division), Department for Infrastructure, asking for an update on the traffic survey on the B118 Tamnaherin Road between the A6 and Eglinton that was planned for the end of 2023 and was set to include details of the number of HGVs using this road.

“In March 2023 I wrote to the Department for Infrastructure to ask that the Permanent secretary introduce a statutory rule, with signage, that will restrict HGVs over 7.5tn from using the B118 road through Lettershandoney, Tamnaherin, & Eglinton (HGVs servicing local amenities to be exempted).

“I continue to be contacted by residents along the B118 regarding large lorries speeding, blocking roads, and causing congestion/air pollutants (especially in the village of Eglinton) and close to local schools, sports facilities, and a local nursing home.

“The road itself continues to be visibly damaged with the weight of lorries.

“The request was in addition to the traffic calming measures that were being considered for Eglinton at that time and I believe would provide a complete, immediate & cost-effective solution for all residents.

“I was informed that the information from this survey would be used to consider further interventions such as the introduction of a weight restriction.

“I am also calling for the DFI Permanent Secretary to visit and meet with the residents along the road to see the problems first hand and to listen to the concerns of residents.”
