People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin

Derry People Before Profit’s Shaun Harkin has said that Translink worker should not accept poverty pay.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “It’s unacceptable for Translink to tell its workers they won’t get a pay rise in the coming year.

“A pay freeze is a pay cut, especially when everyday costs continue to spiral.

“Translink workers shouldn’t accept poverty pay.

“We fully back the overwhelming decision of UNITE members at Translink to reject this atrocious decision and endorse strike action.

“We are certain GMB and SIPTU members will vote similarly to send the strongest united message to Translink and Stormont officials.

“Stormont departments and Translink should not implement cuts on behalf of the Tory Secretary of State.

“Our public transport network is precious and needs to be protected and expanded. Workers at the heart of the network need to be properly valued and respected.

“There is once again plenty of money for war but we’re told there’s nothing available for a vital public service and essential workers.

“Corporations are posting record profits and the super-rich are hoarding wealth while more and more workers are taking strike action because they’re being given no choice.

“Translink workers will get the backing of the vast majority of people in all communities because there’s an understanding if we don’t take a stand we’ll get nothing.”
