Harkin: Solidarity with striking DfI Roads Service workers

PBP Councillor Shaun Harkin with striking Roads Service workers in April this year

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin has urged the public to come out and support striking Roads Service workers this week.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “DfI Roads Service workers forced to hit the picket line again this week in pursuit of fair pay have our full solidarity.

“DfI officials are using the excuse of Stormont being down to claim they don’t have the means to take appropriate action – but they have no problem implementing cuts demanded by the Tories.

“What road service workers do is essential and it’s not acceptable for them to be on low pay. The draconian bonus system should be replaced with decent pay.

“We commend UNITE and GMB trade unions for backing their members and supporting the strike. Strike action has delivered pay rises during the cost of living crisis.

“The political system is failing when those at the centre of it for decades can’t pay workers properly and maintain our infrastructure in a safe way.

“Join me on the Woodburn picket line this Thursday, July 6, at 10am to stand in solidarity with the strikers.”
