Eastwood: Johnson unfit for public office

Foyle MP and SDLP leader Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is unfit to hold public office ahead of the consideration of a report from the Standards and Privileges Committee into the former MP in the Commons today.

Mr Eastwood said that the report clearly demonstrates the scale of dishonesty and contempt with which Mr Johnson treated the public.

Said the Foyle MP: “Boris Johnson has, throughout a long period in public life, demonstrated an unparalleled ability to lie and dissemble on an industrial scale.

“The brass necked contempt with which he has treated the public, particularly people who made enormous, life changing sacrifices during the Covid pandemic, is shocking and it has all been in his narrow self-interest.

“The report of the Standards and Privileges Committee demonstrates just how unfit he is to hold public office and will, I hope, be supported with overwhelming consent in the Commons.

“It is important to rebuild confidence in the institutions of government that those who abuse the public’s trust and fall so far short of the standards expected of those in public life are seen to be held to account.”
