Long-standing Sinn Fein councillor to be new Derry mayor

Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue

Veteran Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue is expected to be elected mayor of Derry and Strabane at the council’s annual general meeting tomorrow, Monday, June 5.

Ms Logue, from the city’s Brandywell area, will take over from outgoing party colleague, Councillor Sandra Duffy, who has been mayor for the past year.

SDLP Strabane councilor, Jason Barr has been nominated by the party as deputy mayor.

Sinn Féin enjoyed a huge victory in Derry and Strabane in this month’s local government elections, with all eighteen of their candidates being returned.

Now the largest party on the council, Sinn Féin is entitled to three mayors over the term of the authority under the D’Hondt power-sharing system with the SDLP taking one mayoralty.

One of Derry’s longest serving councillors, Ms Logue was first elected to the former Derry city council in 2005.

She was returned for a fifth time in this month’s local election. She previously served as deputy mayor in 2007-2008 and will become the ninth Sinn Féin mayor of the council.

Ms Logue is an aunt of legendary Derry City FC captain, Ryan McBride.

Following his sudden death in 2017, Ms Logue successfully proposed the city’s Brandywell Stadium be changed to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium in her nephew’s honour.

Derry city and Strabane district council’s annual general meeting will take place in the Guildhall at 7pm on Monday.
