Pulis: River Faughan must be protected

It will cost £50 million to clean up dump at Mobuoy near Derry

People Before Profit Waterside representative Davina Pulis has called for environmental protection for the River Faughan

She has pledged to fight for the River Faughan if elected to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Pulis claims that the complacency of political representatives has left the river facing environmental catastrophe.

The council has previously stated that it will cost £50 million to clear up the illegal Mobuoy dump site near the River Faughan.

Said Ms Pulis: “For years people involved in our local authorities turned a blind eye to the activities of illegal dumpers.

“We now have Europe’s largest illegal dump on the banks of the River Faughan.

“Mobuoy is not the only threat to the river.

“There are over 20 other illegal waste dumps threatening the delicate ecosystem of the Faughan Valley.

“Another major threat has been the ridiculous planning decisions implemented by past Councils; these have seen housing developments being approved on the Faughan floodplain.

“There must be tighter planning regulations to make sure the mistakes of the past are not repeated.”
