Harkin: Radio Foyle journalists right to strike back

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said that Radio Foyle journalists are right to strike back against BBC bosses over job and programming cuts at the station.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “People Before Profit are in full solidarity with the decision of BBC NI journalists to vote overwhelmingly for strike action in response to drastic cuts at Radio Foyle.

“BBC NI Director Adam Smyth should come to sense and reverse plans to shutdown Radio Foyle or resign immediately.

“Smyth’s actions have been dictatorial and he doesn’t have the confidence of BBC staff nor people in Derry and the North West. If he continues on in this direction, his loss of support will be irreversible and his position untenable.

“He has refused thus far the invitation to come to the Guildhall to face scrutiny for his treatment of staff and our public service.

“We will re-issue this demand if re-elected on May 18.

“We think it’s time to strike back at the horrendous decisions of Tory BBC bosses.

“If workers are on Radio Foyle picket line on Northland Road we will join them and rally support for the NUJ.

“People Before Profit are standing candidates in all Derry and Strabane DEAs with the message workers deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

“Bullies like Adam Smyth need to be challenged with collective action.”
