McLaughlin slams BBC failure to invest in Derry

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has slammed the failure of the BBC to invest in Derry while spending £48 million on a revamp of its Belfast headquarters.

The BBC NI Director Adam Smyth confirmed the figure during an interview on BBC Radio Ulster on Wednesday.

Said the Foyle MLA: “The BBC can dress this up any which way they please, but the hard truth is that they are investing tens of millions of pounds in their Belfast headquarters, while gutting local journalism in Derry.

“The tireless and dedicated campaign to Save Radio Foyle has demonstrated the strength of opposition to these BBC plans, but the organisation still seems intent on depriving our community of the exceptional journalism that we have all come to know from Radio Foyle.

“It is a slap in the face that the man who has forced through these cuts has now been elevated to his new permanent post within the corporation.

“The new BBC NI Director has lost the trust and confidence of people here, but it is not too late to restore it by reversing this decision and investing in this city.

“We will stand firmly with the journalists and staff in BBC Radio Foyle until they get the justice they deserve.”
