Concern over location of Claudy’s Battery Energy Storage System

People Before Profit say it has been contacted by concerned residents in the Claudy / Killaloo area regarding plans for a huge electrical Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the Gortnaran Road.

The party says this is a a much-loved, beautiful walking route and in an ‘Area of Huge Landscape Importance’ overlooked by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

People Before Profit Faughan representative Damian Gallagher said: “The storage of energy from renewables and the move away from fossil fuels through safe and sustainable technology is undoubtedly needed.

“However, this emerging BESS technology does come with several very significant risk factors that make this
planned location unsuitable for this installation.

“These plans involve 30 large shipping container style units that can release or leak flammable gas, cause fires and ignite large explosions.

“Wind speed volatility of turbines can lead to variable cycles between charging and discharging of the
batteries with increased cycles creating substantial thermal runaway that can cause flammable gas to build and cause explosions.

“Given that the location of these plans is close to local roads, the newly opened A6, the river Faughan and less than one mile from the centre of Claudy village (and numerous homes, schools and shops) the risk associated with this planned BESS installation is significant.

“I will stand with local community activists who oppose this installation and to amplify their concerns and the associated risks to the local area and beyond.”
