‘Astounding silence’ over threat to Strabane NWRC campus

PBP Tyrone rep Carol Gallagher

It was reported last week about proposals by the Department of the Economy of ‘horrific’ funding cuts of almost 20% for Further and Higher Education in 2023-24.

People Before Profit Tyrone representative Carol Gallagher says that to-date the elected MLAs for West Tyrone have been relatively silent on this matter.

Said Ms Gallagher said: “Cuts of this scale would obviously put further pressure on our local North West and
South West Regional Colleges.

“This includes the Strabane Campus of NWRC.

“However, the silence and lack of attention to this matter by our local MLAs in West Tyrone has been deafening.

“With inherent threats to jobs, course provision and access to education for young people being threatened in the area, this is completely unacceptable.

“I would call upon as many people as possible to contact their local MLA and ask them to explain this silence, to lobby the DFE to take action now and to commit to ensuring that any cuts to educational budgets are reversed as a matter of urgency should the current Stormont government be reconvened.’’
