PBP: Support strikes to end pay cuts and austerity

Teachers and healthcare trade unions are coordinating a major day of strike action this on Tuesday 21 February.

They will be joined at the Derry Trades Union Council Workers Demand Better Guildhall Square 10am rally by striking Magee lecturers and striking Housing Executive maintenance workers.

People Before Profit Cllrs Shaun Harkin and Maeve O’Neill said: “People Before Profit will be joining workers from across workplaces and communities putting feet on the street to say no more Tory pay cuts and austerity while corporations post record profits.

“Government must start prioritising our teachers, our schools and students, our NHS workers and everyone dependent on the health service.

“People are fed-up with the DUP’s blatant support for the Tories.

“People are fed-up with all the main Stormont parties shrugging their shoulders, voting year in, year out to slash pay and funding, and then telling us ‘there is no alternative’.

“The political establishment and corporate bosses are digging in to protect what’s become a racket for the super-rich.

“The message from the pay revolt strike wave is: enough is enough, there is an alternative and there must be change.

“If there’s no shift we are heading towards a general strike coordinated by trade unions here and across Britain. Right now, this is our best hope to make progress on pay and to pave the way for ousting the Tories.

“We fully back workers taking industrial action and will use our platforms to do everything we can to support the strikes.”
