Sadness at passing of ‘true gem of a Derry Girl’ Jemma McDaid

Mary Durkan with her ‘gem’ of a friend Jemma McDaid who has sadly passed away

FORMER SDLP Foyleside Councillor Mary Durkan has spoken of her heartbreak at the sad passing of her close friend Jemma McDaid.

Ms McDaid passed away at her home in Derry on Friday, December 23.

Writing on social last night, Ms Durkan said: “True friends are always together in spirit.” – LM Mongtomery.

“Heartbreaking news tonight of the passing of @jemmamcdaid.

“A true gem of a Derry Girl. A beautiful person inside and out.

“Jemma was one of the kindest, most caring people I’ve ever known. She was totally devoted to her family and friends.

“They will miss her so much.

“Very grateful for all the lovely memories and for the gift of Jemma’s friendship.

“Suaimhneas siorai uirthi.”

A family notice reads: “McDAID, 23rd. December 2022, peacefully at her home 4 Dundrum Park, Foyle Springs, Derry, JEMMA, beloved daughter of John, (J.J.) and the late Marianne, loving sister of Darren, Ryan, Michaela and Darcy, devoted aunt of Adam, Matthew, Caiden, Callum, Kayla, Romy and Myia-Anna.

“Dearly loved and will be sadly missed by the entire family circle and friends.

“Funeral leaving her home on Monday 26th. December at 9:20 a.m. to Holy Family Church, Ballymagroarty, for requiem mass at 10:00 a.m.

“Interment afterwards in the City Cemetery.

“Sacred Heart Of Jesus have mercy on her soul.

“Our Lady Of Lourdes intercede for her.”
