A woman who featured in pictures of Bloody Sunday in 1972 has sadly passed away.

May O’Neill (nee Moore) was photographed walking behind Bishop Edward Daly as he waved a white and bloodied handkerchief while people carried dying 17-year-old Jackie Duddy away after being shot by British paratroopers in Derry.

A total of 13 people were shot dead by British soldiers during a civil rights march in the city on Sunday, January 30, 1972.

A 14th person later died of their injuries.

The iconic images which feature May walking behind Bishop Daly dressed in a coat and head scarf were taken by photojournalist Fulvio Grimaldi.

At the time the late Bishop Daly was a 39-year-old curate in St Eugene’s Cathedral in the Bogside.

A family notice reads: “The death has taken place on December 16, 2022, of May O`Neill (née Moore) 96 Hollyhill Road, Strabane.
