This week marked the completion of extensive works to extend the City Cemetery with the provision of over 800 new plots in the Kildrum Gardens of Derry’s Creggan.

The works, which were carried out by E Quinn Civils Ltd, over the past year, will successfully extend the operational life of the City Cemetery for new plots by a minimum of four years.

In addition to providing more grave plots, an associated access road was extended from the existing cemetery site and additional parking spaces provided along the new access road.

All of the works were carried out in close consultation and engagement with the local community who have been very understanding and supportive throughout the process.

Thanking the local community for their co-operation, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Sandra Duffy, said the completion of the works was a significant milestone for the Council.

She said: “Council is delighted to see this work completed and the additional grave space now available to the public.

“Council want to acknowledge the important role the local community played in facilitating these works.

“These essential works have successfully alleviated pressures on space at the City Cemetery as we move forward with our plans for the new Cemetery at Mullennan Road, which will ;provide a further 20 year burial space provision.”

Council’s Head of Environment and Building Control, Conor Canning advised that the new Kildrum extension to the City Cemetery was operational from Monday 28th November 2022, and will cover over two levels.

He said visitors to this new area are asked to note that parking is only available at the upper tier and access to both levels is via a one way system with no parking allowed along its length in the interests of Health and Safety.

“We are very pleased to have this additional cemetery space operational and would appeal to the public to follow the instructions provided at the Cemetery and co-operate fully with Cemetery staff at all times.

“Should you require any further information please contact the City Cemetery office on 028 71362615 where the staff will deal with your enquiry.”
