O’Neill: Seize opportunity to demand Derry rail expansion

People Before Profit Cllr Maeve O’Neill has said that it was time to seize the opportunity to deman an expansion to the Derry rail network.

Said Cllr O’Neill: “The fact that there’s to be a special train from Derry to the FAI cup final in Dublin is a tribute to the work of the rail campaign group Into The West.

“The significance of Into The West’s achievement is clear from the fact that some local politicians have rushed forward to claim credit.

“In doing so, they belittle the achievement of Into The West. They diminish the role of the people in achieving progressive change.

“The fact that rail tickets for the big game on November 13th were snapped up in a couple of hours shows the vast potential for expansion of Derry’s tran network. A time-tabled service to Dublin is an entirely practical objective.

“There are now rail campaign groups across the island, North and South. These will be key elements in building an all-Ireland rail campaign and eventually an all-Ireland network.

“Rail is the oldest means of mass transportation we have. It dates back to the middle of the 19th century. Now in the 21st century, its time has come again.”
