McLaughlin urges public vigilance on ‘despicable’ cost-of-living scams

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has warned the public to be vigilant on cost-of-living scams, following reports of scammers purporting to help people with the cost-of-living crisis.

Recent research has shown that half of all UK adults have been affected by scams

Said Ms. McLaughlin: “It is deeply worrying that we are hearing increasing reports of scammers purporting to help people with the cost-of-living crisis.

“Recent statistics showing that over half of UK adults have received or know someone who has received a suspicious communication and this just evidences that anyone can be a victim of unscrupulous scammers.

“I’d warn everyone to be vigilant for these dangerous scams, never follow links in unscrupulous texts and confirm with the organisation or company directly.

“I’d particularly encourage people to do everything possible to make more vulnerable family and neighbours aware of such schemes.

“At a time when so many people are struggling, it is absolutely despicable that people are preying on vulnerable people in this way.”
