Former Mayor of Derry and Strabane Councillor Brian Tierney

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has condemned graffiti appearing to target his party colleague Councillor Brian Tierney, following the unrest in Galliagh on Monday evening.

He also condemned the violence on Fairview Road during which two NI Housing Executive vehicles were hit with masonry and fire crews were forced to withdraw after masonry was thrown at them.

Mr Eastwood said the Derry City and Strabane District councillor worked “every hour of every day for people in this community”.

He said those “scrawling threats on walls in Galliagh don’t represent people here, and they won’t deter Brian from working for everyone in our city”.

The Foyle MP called on those responsible to “stop destroying their own community.”

The PSNI said they were aware of the graffiti and were making enquiries.
