Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Padraig Delargy

SINN Fein’s Padraig Delargy has topped the poll in the Foyle constituency polling 9,471 first preference votes.

He was parachuted into the constituency earlier this year after the Sinn Fein leadership ousted sitting MLAs Martina Anderson and Karen Mullan in a shake up of the Derry branch.

The quota to get elected in Foyle is 7,811 where there was a 61.4 per cent turn out in the constituency.

The SDLP’s Mark H Durkan was also elected on the first count polling 7,999 first preference votes.

Three more seats are up for grabs with the SDLP’S Brian Tierney and Sinead McLaughlin vying for a seat with less than 100 votes between them (Tierney – 3,272; McLaughlin – 3,189).

Sinn Fein’s Ciara Ferguson is expected to take a fourth seat.

But there is a dog fight for the fifth seat between the DUP’s Gary Middleton who polled 4,101 against new kid on the Derry block the Ulster Unionist Party’s Ryan McCready who polled 3,744.

Counting will continue well into the evening for the final three seats.
