SDLP candidate for Foyle Mark H Durkan this weekend completed the Belfast Marathon to raise funds for a local addiction charity.

ARC Fitness-Addiction Recovery Coaching provides a wealth of support for individuals battling with addiction by improving mental and physical wellbeing through physical activity, counselling and education.

Mr Durkan’s GoFundMe Page with a target of £1,500 will remain open for donations until the end of May.

Said Mr Durkan: “I’m no stranger to the marathon circle, having taken part in the Walled City Marathon three times before.

“I set my sights high putting my name down for the Belfast Marathon earlier this year hwever the training nose-dived a bit with the run-up to election and a bout of Covid doing the rounds at the end of February.

Mr Durkan with his family after the marathon

“I enjoy running, it’s a great form of escapism- good for the body and spirit. My efforts got off to a brisk start on Sunday but the wheels came off at 16 miles.

“I dug deep and managed to hobble over the finish line but I can assure you I will never run another marathon.

“It was great to see a few Derry faces and hear a few Derry voices in the crowd- I doubt I could have kept going without their support.

“I want to say a massive thanks to everyone for their support so far and would appreciate any donations in the weeks ahead to support the wonderful ARC Fitness.

“I hope any funds raised will help those brave individuals who have taken the first step on the long road to recovery by seeking help.”
