The Ulster History Circle has unveiled a blue plaque in Derry to local muscian James McCafferty.

The plaque was approved by Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Business and Culture Committee back in January of this year.

James MacCafferty (1915 -1995) was a well known local musician, who was a leading organiser of the the Feis.

The UHC agreed that the plaque would be unveiled at Francis Street in April 2022 as part of the 100th anniversary of the Feis Dhoire Cholmcille.

On Saturday, members of Mr McCafferty’s family, friends and local people gathered in Francis Street for the formal unveiling his blue plague.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke also attended the unveiling of the blue plaque.

The Mayor tweeted: “It was a pleasure to attend the unveiling of a Blue Plaque by the Ulster History Circle in memory of musician, teacher, choirmaster, and Feis Doire accompanist James MacCafferty.

“I was delighted to speak in front of a crowd of James’ family, friends, former pupils and choir members.”
