McLaughlin welcomes plans to upgrade Peace Bridge lighting

THE SDLP’s Sinéad McLaughlin has welcomed the commitment of the Department for Infrastructure to replace and upgrade lights on the Peace Bridge that have been faulty and reliable for years.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I have been working for several months with both Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Department for Infrastructure to ensure the renewal of illumination of the Peace Bridge.

“Due to its complex design this has been challenging for the council to properly maintain these lights and the bridge spires have been left in the dark for a long time.

“I am therefore delighted that the SDLP’s Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon has agreed to upgrade the lights on the Peace bridge to LEDs.

“The LEDS are not only more environmentally friendly but also have a much longer life span and should reduce the need for regular street lighting maintenance.

“The Peace Bridge has become as iconic as the Foyle itself and as not only a link between the City and Waterside, but its symbolism for our collective want of a peaceful future.

“I hope that the retrofit will once again put the Peace Bridge at the centre of our City’s nightscape.”
